An Introduction to Augmentative &
Alternative Communication (AAC)

Presenters: Rosa McAllister and Mark Reeves (Networks) with Kathy Dunkelberger, Lee Flad, Barbara Gimino, Ann Reeves, & Kim Riegel (Northumberland County's Communication Mentors)

As more and more people in Northumberland County use various systems of communication, our roles as supporters, assistants, and communication partners becomes increasingly important. This three-hour interactive workshop is open to all interested in expanding their general knowledge of AAC including those who already support people using AAC as well as those interested in learning how others might find and use systems for fuller expression.

Specifically, we will offer an introduction to:

  • What communication really is,
  • How everyone communicates regardless of their "diagnosis", "label", or current "level of functioning",
  • The types of communication systems people may choose to use to either complement or replace their current means of communication, and
  • How we can ALL better support people who communicate differently!

This session will be repeated three more times throughout the year.
Funding for this event has been provided by the Northumberland County MH/MR.
